Population: 1226Postal code: FO 350Location: N 62° 9' 23 W 7° 9' 59Municipality: Vestmanna Vestmanna is the largest village on Streymoy. It lies on the west coast and has a view towards the island of vagoy.Vestmanna was the port of call of the ferry from Vagar and the airport. Thus all the traffic to and from the airport passed Vestmanna. That is over now. A submerged tunnel now connects the two islands and has replaced the old ferry. The traffic enters the tunnel from just above the village of Leynar and thereforethe traffic is not passing Vestmanna any more. People in Vestmanna mainly live by the fishing-industry. There is a fillet-factory in the village that takes fish from the modern fishing-fleet. In the inlet of Vestmanna there is fish farming.Also Vestmanna has production of trawl and a slipway. Since 1953, Vestmanna has provided electric power to the islands by its hydroelectric power stations. In a valley high above the village there are dams providing water trough large tubes to the three power stations in the village. Vestmanna takes turns in hosting an annual civic-festival called Fjarðastevna. The Fjarðastevnan is changing between Vestmanna and Skála/Strendur. The festival is similar to Olavsøka in Torshavn but smaller. It is held in the beginning of July. Vestmanna is popular with tourists due to the fact that it is a charming village but especially because boat trips are arranged from Vestmanna to Vestmannabjorgini. These are impressive bird cliffs and caves just outside Vestmanna. When the weather allows it several trips are arranged a day. They start from the ferry port and one trip takes about 3 hours.
